Garbage

Garbage is collected every other week on your scheduled pickup day, and is limited to one 77 litre (44 pound) container per household picked up every second week. All garbage cans must have handles.   Acceptable garbage items are listed on the collection schedule below, while our Organics and Recycling Separation fact sheet helps you know what you can recycle or put into the organics collection.

Please note that all garbage is collected by hand, and therefore cannot exceed the limit.

If you have extra garbage, tickets can be purchased for $2.00 or a book of 6 for $10.00, at City Hall, 410 Esplanade, or Frank Jameson Community Centre, 810 6th Avenue.

All containers must be out by 8 a.m. on your pickup day.

Recycling

Curbside recycling is collected every other week in your collection bag or bin on your scheduled pickup day. While the quantity of recycling is unlimited, the contents must be clean and dry, and left loose in the recycling bag or bin.

Additional yellow bags can be purchased at City Hall or the Frank Jameson Community Centre for $1.25 each.

Please note that plastic bags and glass are not permitted in curbside collection. Be sure to collect these and take them to the depot.

TIPS FOR SORTING RECYCLING AT HOME
  • Have separate containers for sorting recycling to stay organized. For example, a bin for curbside recycling, and then separate bins for depot recycling such as glass or soft plastics.
  • Have the sorting guide from the town collection schedule somewhere visible.
  • Make sure that containers are properly rinsed before placing them in the bin.
  • Flatten items and put things in the bin loose. No plastic bags!
  • Try and reuse containers to reduce waste and purchase items with little to no packaging.
  • Get creative! Use tote bags, crates, or whatever you have around the house for storing recycling.
