Town urges Province to quickly assist industries affected by U.S. tariffs

Ladysmith, BC — In response to the United States' unjustified tariffs and ongoing threats of additional tariffs on Canadian goods and services, Town of Ladysmith Mayor and Council is calling on the B.C. government to take swift action in supporting affected industries.

“While we appreciate that the Province has responded quickly and forcefully, we implore the Province to reduce inter-provincial trade barriers, secure additional overseas markets and provide support to major industries affected by these tariffs as quickly as possible,” says Mayor Deena Beeston.

The Town has sent a letter to the Premier David Eby outlining its concerns.

The United States has imposed 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum, and a delay of 25% tariffs on imports that comply with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) is expected to come to an end on April 2. Additionally, the U.S. is planning on imposing “reciprocal” tariffs on all countries on April 2 and is intending to announce further tariffs on lumber in the near future.

The forestry industry is a major economic driver and employer in Ladysmith and tariffs on lumber could exceed 40% should the U.S. follow through on all its threats.

“These additional tariffs, if implemented, will have a significant impact on our local economy. I am committed to standing up for our community and defending those affected by these unjust measures,” adds Beeston.

The Town of Ladysmith continues to emphasize the importance of supporting Canadian and local businesses whenever possible. The Town's purchasing policy prioritizes vendors that promote job creation within the local area, which is defined as the Cowichan Valley Regional District and the Regional District of Nanaimo, and contributes to a stronger local economy.
