Town Unveils New Public Art Banners for Summer 2024

Ladysmith, BC – May 7, 2024 – A pair of new public art banners created by artist Trisha Oldfield will hang prominently along Ladysmith’s 1st Avenue, further enhancing the downtown’s distinct sense of place for our community and its many visitors.

The 2024 theme for the Town of Ladysmith’s Community Banner Program is Ladysmith Celebrates; installation of the banners starts today.

The titles of the two banners are ‘Ladysmith Celebrates 1’ and ‘Ladysmith Celebrates 2’.

“I was happy to read that the theme of this year’s banner program art submission revolved around the festivals and events in Ladysmith,” said Oldfield. “Raising our daughter in Chemainus and Ladysmith, we have amazing memories of Arts on the Avenue, the Light Up Nights, the parades, music at Transfer Beach, and Pirate Days at the marina. It was fun to create a design that reflected the joy and happiness this town brings to the people who live here.”

The Parks, Recreation & Culture Advisory Committee and Public Art Banners Selection Committee endorsed Oldfield’s submission. Council approved the recommendations by both committees at its meeting on February 20, 2024.

The banner program intends to beautify Ladysmith’s downtown core through public art while at the same time creating opportunities for local artists to showcase their work for all to enjoy.

You’ll also find the banners designed by Karen Tchamourian last season installed along Transfer Beach Boulevard and 4th Avenue.
