Town transitioning to Lifesaving Society Swim for Life programming

In conjunction with many municipalities nation-wide, the Town of Ladysmith is transitioning our swimming and water safety programming from the Canadian Red Cross to the Lifesaving Society of BC, beginning in early 2023.

The change is the result of the Canadian Red Cross winding down its role in aquatics and water safety to focus more on humanitarian efforts.

Ladysmith Parks, Recreation & Culture staff have worked hard in recent months to ensure a smooth transition for our swimming, lifeguarding and aquatic leadership programs, with support from both the Lifesaving Society of BC and Canadian Red Cross.

The upcoming Winter 2023 Activity Guide will reflect the change to the Lifesaving Society of BC’s Swim for Life programming.

In the meantime, parents/guardians can refer to this helpful chart to determine which level to register your child in Swim for Life lessons based on past participation in Red Cross programming.

Parks, Recreation and Culture staff are also available to help in answering any questions by calling the FJCC Reception Desk at 250.245.6424, or in-person during your next visit to the facility.

What’s different about the Lifesaving Society’s Swim for Life program?

The Lifesaving Society is a respected, accomplished organization that has long shared the passion to reduce drowning and aquatic-related injuries.

Swim for Life is a complete learn-to-swim program,  which includes Parent and Tot (4 months – 3 years), Preschool (Age 3-5 years), Swimmer (Age 5-12 years), as well as Adult Swimmer.

At the same time, you can expect the same friendly, attentive and safety-minded Parks, Recreation & Culture staff assisting your child in the water as they build confidence and learn to skills, helping to promote safe participation in aquatic activities.

Swim for Life also leads seamlessly into the Lifesaving Society’s lifesaving and lifeguard training programs.

The Town is offering a two-weekend course on November 18-20 and November 25-27 for those aspiring towards a potential job opportunity as a swim instructor.

Completion of this training opportunity will qualify you to teach all the Lifesaving Society's Swim for Life levels, Canadian Swim Patrol, Swim to Survive, Junior Lifeguard Club, Bronze Medal Family and more.

Visit the Town's Employment Opportunities page for a list of current job postings.
