Town and CVRD to repair partially obstructed water main below Stocking Lake Dam

The Town of Ladysmith and Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) are working together to install an emergency bypass system as a first step to fixing a partially blocked water main below the Stocking Lake Dam.

Stocking Lake is the secondary water supply source for the Town, the Diamond Improvement District and Stz'uminus First Nation and the CVRD, specifically Saltair.

The water main was discovered to be partially obstructed approximately a month ago and both the Town and CVRD have been working together since that time on a repair solution.

On Monday, Ladysmith Council approved the staff recommendation to proceed with the necessary bypass work with the funds to come from existing water reserves.

The total estimated project cost for the new bypass is between $300,000 and $400,000 -which will be split equally between the Town and CVRD.

Following the completion of the temporary bypass, staff will report back to Council on options for replacing the valve.

Construction is expected to start in mid-December and last for approximately a week.

Residents will be notified through our website and social media of any resulting closures along the Stocking Lake Trail.

The Stocking Lake Dam was built in 1902. The partially blocked valve dates back to the 1960s when the dam was raised and a new water main was built to connect to the control building.
