4th Avenue/ Rocky Creek Dip construction detour route open
June 25, 2019 The Town of Ladysmith is advising residents that 4th Avenue between Greenhorn Place and Christie Road is now closed until the fall to replace the Rocky Creek culvert.
An alternate route has been arranged in accordance with the attached map while the construction and road work is taking place over the coming weeks.
The McKinley Road / Churchill Place detour route is also now open along with signs to direct motorists.
Additionally, speed bumps are being installed and motorists are asked to obey all speed limit and traffic signs, and watch for pedestrians and for people trying to get in or out of their driveways.
We estimate that the trip to Forrest Field should only take an extra 3 to 5 minutes along the detour route.
The Town has also carried out dust control measures on Churchill Place in preparation for the 4th Avenue closure.
The steel arch culvert being installed at Rocky Creek is twice the size of the one being replaced.
Additionally, the road is being fully rebuilt to an improved standard that will include two traffic lanes, a pedestrian sidewalk and bike lanes.

The McKinley Road / Churchill Place detour route is now open. The contractor is currently doing tree removal so that the gas main can be moved for installation of the new culvert over Rocky Creek. 4th Avenue will remain open on Wednesday and Thursday, although there will be delays of up to 15 minutes associated with the tree removal. Flaggers are on site for traffic control.
4th Avenue will be fully closed starting on Friday, June 21, when the contractor will install infrastructure to support the diverted gas main. 4th Avenue will likely remain closed after that for the duration of the project.
Detour signs and speed bumps will be installed on Friday or Monday. The Town has already carried out dust control measures on Churchill Place.
Please respect the residents along the detour route, obey all speed limits and traffic signs, and watch for pedestrians and for people trying to get in or out of their driveways.
We thank everyone for your understanding during construction.
The Town of Ladysmith is updating residents and Forrest Field user groups that the construction project to replace the culvert on 4th Avenue over Rocky Creek is beginning this week.
The contractor will be on site beginning Wednesday to complete necessary site preparation work.
Fourth Avenue through the dip will remain open during this initial phase and motorists are asked to monitor their speed and obey traffic control flaggers.
The full closure of 4th Avenue is scheduled to begin in the morning on Friday, June 21, 2019.
Earlier in June, Ladysmith Council awarded the contract to install a steel arch culvert and fully rebuild the crossing to an improved standard that will include two traffic lanes, a pedestrian sidewalk and bike lanes.
Throughout the construction period the McKinley Road-Churchill Place access road is being reopened as the detour route to bypass 4th Avenue. The Town is asking that motorists are respectful of the neighbourhoods they're driving through.
Over 500 notices were delivered to residents in the affected area during the second week of June informing them about the construction project.
