Updates as Ladysmith Snowfall Reaches More Than 20 Inches at Public Works Yard

Town of Ladysmith crews are continuing to work hard 24 hours a day to keep local roads clear and safe for motorists following two significant snowfall events.  

A total of 20 inches of snow has been recorded at the Public Works Yard on 6th Avenue since the weekend.

When the snow stops it takes approximately 48 hours to clean all 60 km of roads in Ladysmith.

Parents and caregivers are being asked to remind children that it’s unsafe for children to be playing in snow banks as our ploughs continue to clear and widen roads.

Please caution children to stay a safe distance away from the road.

We wish to also thank residents who have shovelled the sidewalks in front of their house. 

Clearing these walkways is a requirement for all homeowners, commercial property owners or the occupier and must be done by 10 a.m. the morning following a snowfall.

The Town also appreciates the efforts of those citizens who regularly assist their elderly and/or disabled neighbours in this regard.

Residents can visit the Public Works Yard at 330 6th Ave for a complimentary salt/sand mixture to keep sidewalks clear and safe. The bin is located at the front gate.

You can also help us, help you, by clearing out the snow around fire hydrants, and please don’t pile up snow around them.

Make sure there is at least one metre (three feet) of clearance around the hydrant as well as a path to the street.

Garbage collection in town was also once again suspended on Tuesday and will hopefully resume tomorrow.

If your route was missed on Monday, please keep bringing your bins out to the curb in the morning.

Lastly, due to snow accumulations in Ladysmith and area, we are postponing Wednesday’s Development Cost Charges Open House to next Wednesday, February 27. The event will take place in the Lower Program Room at the Frank Jameson Community Centre from 4-6 p.m.
