Heart Lake Trail Reopen to Public After 115 Trees Cleared

The majority of the Heart Lake trail is now reopened to the public after some heavy lifting to clear away dozens of downed trees.

Town of Ladysmith staff worked over several days to remove 115 trees that had fallen on or near the trail following the Dec. 20 wind storm.

The steep section of the Heart Lake trail leading up the scarp face as well as the route that continues heading east is now fully clear of fallen debris.

Town staff were unable to complete trail work on the west side of the loop due to high water levels.  The public is asked to please avoid using that part of the trail for the time being.

Efforts are now focused on the Stocking Lake trail, which remains closed to the public.

Staff have determined there are 130 trees down making the Stocking Lake trail loop unsafe for the public to walk.  Work to clear the trail will begin on Monday and is expected to take several days.

The trail linking Stocking Lake and Heart Lake is also closed pending an assessment of the work required.

There are 15 trees down across the water main trail from Thetis Road to Stocking Lake.  This area will reopen once staff have cleared the area.

The public is also reminded to obey posted signage along the Holland Creek trail.

The stretch of trail between the RCMP detachment building and the pedestrian bridge is closed immediately and until further notice due to damage from the windstorm and to accommodate construction of the Water Filtration Plant.
