Town marks Louis Riel Day with flag-raising ceremony

The Town of Ladysmith has proclaimed Saturday, November 16, 2019 as Louis Riel Day and a flag-raising ceremony was held earlier today at City Hall to celebrate Metis culture and commemorate Riel's contribution to Canadian history.

"The culture, language and heritage of the Metis people is rich in spiritual beliefs and colourful traditions. As one of Canada’s aboriginal peoples, the Metis are an integral part of British Columbia’s multicultural character," said Mayor Aaron Stone.

"Louis Riel was one the foremost historical Metis leaders and made an enormous contribution towards the development of this country and was a strong advocate for social justice."

British Columbia is home to nearly 90,000 self-identified Metis people, the third-largest Metis population in Canada.

The Town's recognition of Louis Riel Day marks the 134th anniversary of Riel’s death in 1885.

Nanaimo-North Cowichan MLA Doug Routley and Michael Dumont, Board of Directors for Metis Nation British Columbia, were also among the dignitaries and special guests attending the flag-raising at City Hall.
